Constantine. Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf. Warner Bros. Supernatural thriller. W-Kevin Brodbin, Frank Cappello. D-Francis Lawrence. Opens 2/18/05 Based on the DC comics/Vertigo Hellblazer graphic novels, "Constantine" tells the story of John Constantine (Reeves), a man who has literally been to hell and back. When he teams up with skeptical policewoman Angie Dodson (Weisz) to solve the mysterious suicide of her twin sister, their investigation takes them through the world of demons and angels that exists just beneath the landscape of contemporary Los Angeles. Caught in a catastrophic series of otherworldly events, the two become inextricably involved and seek to find their own peace at whatever the cost.While the theology is more comic book than gospel, the film does addresses Heaven and Hell as fact and openly discusses grace versus works and redemption (it could be considered a discussion starter). The depiction of Hell is unnerving, but it's an effective reminder that there is a place where God isn't. There's an afterlife and a place with no hope, only despair. Disappointingly, the film is more an actioneer than theological study. And though the Revelation is loaded with elements to make a moving, often frightening apocalyptic story, moviemakers still shun the Bible as a story source. But then I wasn't really expecting NIV coverage from a film that starred Keanu Reeves. As for his performance, Mr. Reeves is more personality than actor. Even at his best, his roles seem to be tailored for him, much like the days of old when superstars like Cary Grant, John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart and James Stewart were very protective of their screen image, resolving to have their roles rewritten to suit those images.The difference: those megastars had enormous personas.Their performances almost never let us down because they became the people the studios had created. And when all was said and done, they could, indeed, act. Mr. Reeves, on the other hand, though somewhat charismatic, is very limited in his range. Here, there is nothing moving about his character. He's just another defiant one-man army, an apocalyptic Rambo, if you will. Although he doesn't, he always looks as if he's about to say, "Whoa, dude." Mr. Reeves is also betrayed by a script that flip flops between intriguing story and silly concepts. For example, at one point Constantine wants to know if Angie's sister is in hell, so he places his shoe-clad feet in a pail of water and looks directly into a cat's eyes. The next thing we know, he's in Hell, which resembles the Ventura freeway at dusk, with all its occupants, other than Angie's sister, looking like Gollum from "Lord of the Rings." Another disappointment is that God and his angels are more bully than loving presences. A loving God is never conceptualized. One of His lead angels, Gabriel, is a smug, unfeeling tormentor that our hero has to set straight by punching in the jaw. It's not so much a good vs. evil parable as an action video game in love with violent, disconcerting imagery. R (6 or so profanities and it is peppered with obscenities; violent imagery throughout, including a jolting accident as a car hits a man and many gory battles; there are many demonic beings that unnerve; we see several characters that are possessed and a demonic being trying to get out of a human body). Vid. Alt. Wings of Desire. Bruno Ganz, Peter Falk, Solveig Domartin. Fanciful story of an angel overseeing the city of Berlin until he falls in love with a French girl and seeks to become human. Caution, "Wings of Desire" is not for children due to the film's themes and it is rated PG-13 for a sexual situation and one scene with brief nudity. I certainly don't support the theory that angels would desire to switch places with humans. However, this is thought-provoking material and expertly handled by director Wim Wenders. It uplifted me as I speculated the role of guardian angels. Bruno Ganz is superb in his depiction of a celestial being. His eyes are gentle, yet never effeminate, capturing the essence of an angelic being. German with subtitles (broken up whenever American actor Falk speaks).
