Desperate Lives
TV Show Mirrors Our Own Desperation
by American Tract Society
One of the most popular shows on television today is an odd comedy that focuses on “desperate” housewives living as neighbors in a fictitious, perfect-looking neighborhood. This group of women share a common thread. They are all seeking to change their troubled lives by employing a never-ending series of rather bizarre actions. Though sometimes humorous, the consequences of their poor choices more-often-than-not just turn out to be disastrous. One woman is desperate to add romance to her life, while another reaches out for physical affection beyond the bounds of her marriage. A third struggles with perfectionism and selfworth while wondering why she has lost the respect of her family. A fourth woman questions her whole purpose in life as a mother. The popularity of the show suggests that viewers are recognizing parts of themselves in the characters, revealing, to a certain degree, the desperation we may feel in our own lives.Desperation is defined as the drastic actions we consider, or take, to achieve certain goals when our hopes have faded. It seems desperation most frequently sets in when our needs are not met by others and our expectations go unrealized. Howmany times have we expected someone to be there or to do something for us, only to be let down and disappointed? How much better life would be if it involved a truly perfect relationship, one which is seldom, if ever, alluded to in prime time television. Closer than the best relationship we’ve ever known, a vibrant, living bond with the One who created us is essential to give a proper focus to all of life. When we are properly related to God, who is perfect, everything else in life comes into perspective. Our needs are met by One who evokes feelings in stark contrast to desperation...namely, peace, acceptance, love, joy, and purpose.Yes, we can all relate to the truisms of desperate TV programs, but if hints of desperation in your own life make you long for something more…consider God…and turn to Him. His love for you means that He is willing to forgive the sins now separating you from Him. He even provided the way through His Son, Jesus, who gave up His life on the cross to pay the penalty for all your desperate thoughts and deeds.Through Jesus, your debt has been paid in full, but this gift does nothing for you until you accept it. You must recognize your need and believe that Christ died for your sins and rose again to give you new life. When you do, you may confirm your belief through a prayer like this:Dear God, I am sorry for all the desperate things I’ve done in my life apart from You. Please forgive me of those sins. Thank You for loving me enough to let Jesus die on the cross for my sins. Thank You for saving me out of my “tight spot” and forgiving me the free gift of eternal life with You in heaven. Amen.“GOD met me more than halfway, he freed me from my anxious fears. When I was desperate, I called out, and GOD got me out of a tight spot” (Psalm 34:4,6).PRINTED WITH PERMISSION from the American Tract Society at www.atstracts.org.
